Appen Media Group (AMG) is a family owned news media company located in the Northern suburbs of Atlanta. The company was founded in 1990 by Ray and Christina Appen, two veteran newspaper executives formerly with Knight-Ridder/The Miami Herald. The company is now led by their sons, CEO & Publisher Hans Appen and Director of Content and Development Carl Appen.
Since its inception, AMG has focused on professionally produced local journalism in the areas of government, education, business, public safety, and lifestyle news and features. That core mission remains the same today and AMG’s credible, unbiased, and timely community journalism is now disseminated across a wide spectrum of print, audio and digital platforms.
The AMG product portfolio includes a core of six weekly community newspapers with a combined home-delivered circulation of 105,000 editions distributed weekly to the affluent north metro Atlanta suburbs of Alpharetta, Roswell, Johns Creek, Sandy Springs, Dunwoody, Milton and south Forsyth County. AMG provides a competitive advantage in print and digital media in the region in terms of market penetration and community trust. The AMG brand is anchored historically in partnerships within the communities it serves.
AMG has also operated and published news on the award winning appenmedia.com since 1996.
In 2024, AMG purchased the online news hub decaturish.com from longtime owner and founder Dan Whisenhunt. Decaturish serves Decatur and neighboring cities including Avondale Estates, Tucker, Clarkston and Stone Mountain.
In addition to its weekly newspapers and online news websites, AMG assets also include community guides, events, event management, newsletters, custom publications, full service brand development, creative design and production of niche publications.

The core of its business, Appen Media Group publishes the weekly newspapers Alpharetta-Roswell Herald, Dunwoody Crier, Sandy Springs Crier, Johns Creek Herald, Forsyth Herald and Milton Herald.

Appen Media Group owns and operates portals through Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and Instagram with the largest subscribers and follower base for its market. It also has tools to operate custom campaigns for clients and events.
Event Management
Appen Media Group is strongly positioned to manage events marketing efforts for local companies by streamlining marketing, revenue, and day of operations. Internally it operates the annual Best of North Atlanta and Best of Perimeter contests and events.
podcasts
In 2018 Appen Media Group launched the Appen Podcast Network, offering listeners a unique way of consuming local news and entertainment, as well as an outlet for advertisers to reach a larger (and younger) audience in a cost effective way.
Niche Publications
Bi-annually Appen Media Group publishes community guides called the Answer Book, each with topical content and advertisers. It has also published guides for the PGA Tour, high school football, medical, senior, education and summer camps.

Since 2013 Appen Media Group has won over 100 national awards for ad design and page layout. It creates comprehensive and collaborative multi-platform ad campaigns used across a wide media mix.
